Menurut Harold H. titus, filsafat adalah suatu usaha untuk memahami alam semesta, maknanya dan nilainya. Tujuan ilmu adalah control dan tujuan seni adalah kreativitas, kesempurnaan dan keindahan komunikasi dan ekspresi , maka tujuan filsafat adalah pengertian dan kebijaksanaan.Ilmu memberikan kepada kita pengetahuan, dan filsafat memberikan kita hikmah. Filsafat memberikan kepuasan kepada keinginan manusia akan pengetahuan yang tersusun dengan tertib, akan kebenaran.

Filsafat adalah suatu ilmu pengetahuan yang mempunyai ilmu pengetahuan itu sendiri. Tetapi filsafat tidak termasuk dalam ruang ilmu pengetahuan yang khusus boleh dikatakan ilmu pengetahuan tetapi objeknya tidak terbatas. Disamping ilmu pengetahuan maka, di pergunakan suatu ilmu pengetahuan lain lagi yaitu filsafat.

Knowledge comes from the Arabic, 'Alama. The basic meaning of this word is knowledge. The use of the word science in Indonesian proposition is often equated with the word science in English.
